Newsletter No.7 - 12th February 2014

Dear Parents, May I remind you that school is closed next week for half term. School reopens on Monday 24th February. WISH CAKE SALE This Friday 3:05pm in the school hall, buy a cake for your Valentine?! Please bring cake donations to school the morning of the cake sale. LOST Please check the labels in your children’s sweatshirts and school coats. One boy in Yr R has lost a sweatshirt, one boy in Yr 1 a school coat. Owing to the dreadful weather the children have been using different classrooms at lunchtimes so the boys may have left their belongings in another room. We have searched all over school and have been unable to find them. Please have a look and see if your child has come home with the wrong sweatshirt or coat. The coat is named in one of the pockets. Thank you in anticipation. READATHON – Week Beginning March 3rd We would like to support Readathon, a sponsored reading activity. The aim is to raise money for three amazing children’s charities, CLIC Sargent, Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity and Together for Short Lives. We would like all children to take part; a sponsor form should accompany this letter. Please ask family and friends to support this and ensure your child asks for sponsors safely. What do you need to do? 1. We’ll be helping the children to set their own reading challenge, so do get involved in this as you like. They can read books (fiction or non-fiction), comics, poetry, or just listen to stories. Any support and encouragement you can offer would be much appreciated. Readathon is about reading for fun and it’s not assessed! 2. Please help your child(ren) to get sponsored by family and friends and encourage these sponsors to tick the Gift Aid box, if they are eligible. It won’t cost them any extra, but it means Readathon can claim an extra 25% from the taxman! Sponsors must provide their full name and address, but please assure them that their details won’t be shared with any other organisation or used for any other purpose than the Gift Aid claim. COMING SOON - World Book Day March 6th Start thinking of which character your child would like to be. More details next term. PHOTOGRAPHS – Wednesday February 26th If you would like a photo of your pre-school children with your children who are here please you will need to come to the Hall at 8:45am. All children in school will have an individual photo and one with their siblings. PARKING / THE DRIVE The Drive down to school is becoming increasingly dangerous. Please remember it is illegal to park on the pavements and to block the school gates which are an Emergency Exit. HEADLICE Headlice are still a problem in school. Please check your child’s hair carefully and often. Sadly I am unable to exclude children who have head lice. Please read the following extract taken from Hey magazine, thank you. What are head lice and nits? Head lice are tiny grey/brown insects. They are about the size of a sesame seed. Head lice cling to hairs but stay close to the scalp, which they feed off. Head lice lay eggs, which hatch after 7-10 days. It takes about 10 days for a newly hatched louse to grow into an adult and start to lay eggs. Treatment for head lice This will take 5-15 minutes to check each head, depending on hair length and thickness. It is also used as a treatment for head lice • Wash the hair in the normal way with ordinary shampoo. • Rinse out the shampoo and put on lots of ordinary conditioner. • Comb the hair with a normal comb to get rid of tangles. • When the hair is untangled switch to a detection comb. This is a special fine toothed comb. • Slot the teeth of the detection comb into the hair at the roots so it is touching the scalp. • Make sure that all parts of the hair are combed by working around the head. • If you see any lice, clean the comb by wiping it on a tissue or rinse it before the next stroke. • After the whole head has been combed, rinse out the conditioner. • Repeat the combing procedure in the wet hair to check for any lice that might have been missed the first time. This needs to be carried out every 3 to 4 days to catch the lice as they hatch. Have a wonderful and hopefully dry half term. Kind Regards, Jan Ball Headteacher
