Mrs Channon
Mrs Channon is expecting a baby in April and I’m sure you will join with me in wishing her well. Mrs Channon is hoping to work until the end of the Spring Term. Miss Succony will be working with the Bees and Mrs Channon this term and will cover Mrs Channon’s maternity leave. The children already know Miss Succony and both Mrs Channon and Miss Succony are committed to ensuring a smooth transition for the children.

WISH
Thank you to all of you who supported the WISH Christmas Raffle and Santa Story Evening! WISH are now able to help us lay an artificial surface around the gazebo. Work begins on Monday 16th January. Thank you and thank you WISH!

Bad Weather
In the event of bad weather, please listen to BBC Radio Wiltshire and/or Heart Radio to see if the school is closed. We will also try to put notification on the school website as early as we can.

Clubs
A letter regarding Year 2 clubs will be sent out tomorrow.

Free School Meals
If you are entitled to Free School Meals and have not registered, please do so as soon as possible, as the Government have increased the funding to £600 per pupil. This funding allows us to have smaller classes and to have extra staff to support children’s learning.

New Telephone System
Some of you may have noticed that we have had a new telephone system installed. It should now be easier for you to notify us of your child’s absence which can be done by ringing our main number 01373 822716 and following the instructions to leave a message. The telephones will be answered between 8.30am and 3.30pm. Outside of these hours, you will have the opportunity to leave a message. If you experience any problems contacting us, please let us know.

Stranger Danger
We have talked to the children about ‘keeping safe’, following a report from another school. Please be vigilant and keep your children safe on these dark nights.

WISH Christmas Raffle
Your child will be bringing home some raffle tickets for WISH Christmas Raffle. Please sell any that you can and if you need more, let us know. The raffle will be held on 14th December @ 9.00am in the school hall. Thank you!

Parents Evening
We would like to invite you to come and discuss your child’s progress at our ‘Parent’s Evening’. Your child’s teacher will be available on:

You can make an appointment by filling in the schedule which is available in your child’s classroom. Please remember that these appointments are for 10 minutes. Should you need a longer time or are unable to see the teacher on these evenings, please make an alternative appointment.

Lost Cardigan & Sweatshirt
Please check your child’s cardigan or sweatshirt. A reception child has mislaid their cardigan and sweatshirt, size 30”.

Children in Need
Mrs Rush, the school cook, will be selling Pudsey Bear biscuits on Friday 18th November for Children in Need. The biscuits will cost 50p each and there will only be enough for one biscuit per child in school. Children should bring in their money on Friday 18th November.

WISH Table Top Sale
WISH are holding a table top sale on Friday 11th November in the school hall from 2pm until 3pm. There will be Bric-a-Brac, Books, Clothes, Crafts and Refreshments. Pick up some early Christmas bargains.

Absence Line
The absence line 01373 859795 has an answering machine so you can report absences. The office is only manned between 8.30am and 3.30pm, so to avoid frustration, please leave a message on the absence line.

Dinner Money
Please send in your child’s dinner money to your child’s teacher/teaching assistant. It must be placed in a named envelope. It is very difficult for the teaching assistants to deal with loose cash whilst letting the children in. All dinners for the week should be ordered and paid for on Monday mornings. Thank you.

WISH Cake Sale
You should have all received a note about the WISH cake sale on Friday 14th October @ 3.05 pm. Please support WISH by bringing in cakes on the morning of the sale and attending the sale after school. Thank you.

Year 2 Concert DVDs
Please collect your DVD of last year’s Year 2 concert. They are available from the school office. The cost of each DVD is £7.

Half Term and TD Day
The last day that the children are in school before the half term break is Tuesday 18th October 2011. The children should return to school on Monday 31st October.

Parent’s Evenings
We will be having parent’s evening on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th November, so please make a note of these dates in your diary. An appointment sheet will be displayed in your child’s classroom nearer the time.

Clubs
Year 2 clubs will continue after half term, but will stop on Thursday 24th November.

Yr2 Trip to Swindon Rail Museum

Dear Parents

On Tuesday 11th October, we would like to take the year 2 children on an educational visit to Swindon Rail Museum. Our topic this term is ‘Journeys’ and we wanted the children to embark upon a journey themselves. As part of the topic, we will focus on rail travel throughout the ages, so Swindon Rail Museum became the obvious choice for our journey! The museum has recently been awarded the ‘Campaign for Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge!’ so the children are in for a treat!

The school is paying for most of the cost of this trip so that as many children as possible can attend, however, we are asking for a contribution from parents of £7.00 which includes coach travel, exploration of the extensive rail museum as well as a ‘discovery session’ which will last for an hour and will focus upon the achievements of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and George Stephenson. The sessions will be led by qualified teachers.

We would appreciate it if you could send payment to the office by Tuesday 4th October so that we can confirm numbers. If your child is unable to come, they will remain in school on this day. We will be leaving school at 9.00am and returning for 3.30pm. The children will require a packed lunch on this day. If your child is entitled to a free school meal (and therefore will be provided with a packed lunch) please indicate so on the attached slip below. Children will need to wear their school sweatshirts, but may wear jeans/leggings and trainers or other suitable footwear.

If you require any further information about the trip, please do not hesitate to come and see us and you can also find out more about the museum on the website www.steam-museum.org.uk . We are hoping that as many children as possible will be able to take part as we feel that this will be a valuable experience that will undoubtedly support the children’s learning.

Dear Parents
As promised I am writing to give you dates for the term, I hope this advanced notice will help you to arrange time off work or child care for the Christmas plays.

Cooking Club
There are 4 spaces at the Cooking Club which is run by Mrs Rush, the school cook. The club runs on Wednesdays from 1.30 – 3.00 and will focus on basic cooking skills. This group is for adults only. If you would like to attend, please let the school office know.

ICT Drop-In
No access to a computer at home? Do you find some homework difficult without the internet? Would you like support in writing a letter or access to a printer, or need to apply for free school milk? We are opening our computer suite to you for 1 hour each week on Mondays from 3.05 – 4.05. Mr Humphries will be on hand to offer guidance and support should you need it. This is an offer to parents only and unfortunately, we are unable to offer a crèche for children. This is a drop in session, so you can use it as often as you wish or just occasionally if that’s all you need. Please could you complete the slip below to let us know if you think this would be useful to you.

Free School Meals
If your child is in Reception and you think you may be entitled to Free School Meals, please see Mrs Mesnard in the office. Many thanks.

School Uniform
We do have sweatshirts, cardigans, fleeces and waterproof fleeces in stock in many sizes, so if your child has outgrown their sweatshirt or they need a warm coat for the coming winter, please come to the school office. If your child requires larger sizes, we may not have them in stock, so please order them well in advance as it can take several weeks for delivery.

Ofsted and Attendance
I hope you have all had a chance to read our Ofsted report. The Inspectors looked at all aspects of school life and left no stone unturned. We now need you to help us address one of the areas they wish to see improved. Please do all you can to ensure your child is in school and on time. The Governors will be drawing up an Action Plan and monitoring attendance carefully.

Welcome back and I hope you all had a relaxing summer. A very warm welcome to our new Reception children and parents.

Teachers and Classes
I am delighted to welcome Miss Reed and Miss Succony to the staff. Classes are:

Mr Brewer will not have a class this year. In the mornings he will be working with various children on their Basic Skills and in the afternoons he will be working with children who have particular strengths to ensure they can develop these further.
Miss Succony will be covering all classes to release teachers for their PPA time.

Meet the Teachers
If you would like a chance to talk informally with your child’s teacher, Yr1 and Yr2 teachers will be available on Tuesday 13th September from 3.15 – 4.15. Reception teachers will be available in the afternoons for the next few weeks.

Ofsted
We were delighted with our recent Ofsted Report. If Yr1 and Yr2 parents would like a copy, please call in to the school office. The inspectors have asked us to work on further developing the children’s vocabulary and for you to help us by making sure your children attend regularly and arrive on time. If your child is ill, please ring the absence line on 01373 859795, if you arrive after 9am, please bring your child to the office. Thank you.

Reading meeting for Reception Parents
I will be holding a meeting on Wednesday 14th September at 9.25 to explain how we teach reading and how you can help your child. The meeting will be at 9.25 to give parents who need to take children to the pre-school the chance to attend. Please come if you can.

Dear Parents

Hopefully you will all have received a note to say that a man exposed himself to Matravers pupils in Indigo Gardens yesterday. Please take care!

Library
This year the national Summer Reading Challenge for 4 to 11 year olds will run in Wiltshire libraries from 16th July to 3rd September, and the theme will be Circus Stars. The challenge is simple – for children to read six books over the summer, talk to library staff about the books and collect ‘rewards’ to mark their progress. Incentives this year include a yoyo, as well as stickers, a medal and certificate on completion. Circus Stars is not a competition, but a fun personal challenge to encourage children to read more and use libraries more. Last year 8544 Wiltshire children joined the challenge, with 5000 reading all 6 books and 34,879 books being read in total. Families love the challenge and last year 91.1% of the participants said that by taking part in the challenge their reading had improved a little or a lot. For further information, contact your local library.

Parents Evening and Reports & Thank you
Thank you for your forbearance regarding reports and the change of Year 2 concert date. It’s been a busy 2 days. Thank you to all of you who returned your questionnaire. We will endeavour to send out reports on Monday. If you are not collecting your child, please send in written permission for another adult to receive the report.

You are welcome to come after school on Tuesday to discuss the reports if you wish. Teachers will be available from the end of school until 4pm.

WISH
WISH are hiring a bouncy castle for the children to enjoy on Tuesday 19th July. Thank you WISH!

Theatre Visit
On Monday 18th July at 1.45pm, the children will be watching a performance of ’Charlotte’s Web’ by M&M Productions.

Year Two Concert – Wednesday 20th July

Ofsted
Our inspection finishes today! The report is expected to be ready by the beginning of next term.

End of Term
The last day of term will be Thursday 21st July. School re-opens on Monday 5th September.

Facebook
Some parents have approached me about photos of children from our school on Facebook. I am delighted you are proud of your children and Sports Day, but please remember that we have families and children here who, for a variety of reasons, do not wish other people to know where they are. Please help keep our children safe and remove any photographs that contain images of children other than your own. Many thanks in anticipation.

Barnados Badges
Children will hear who has won the ‘teddy’ on Tuesday 5th July. Please encourage your child to wear their badge.

MDSA Vacancy
In September, we will need another Midday Supervisory Assistant for the main school. We will also need a Specific Purpose MDSA to supervise a child with Autism. Both positions are for 1 hour and 10 minutes a day, 5 days per week. Applicants must be able to work as a team. A First Aid qualification will be an advantage. The posts will be subject to Criminal Record Bureau Check and medical clearance. If you are interested in applying, please ask at the school office for an application form. Please complete the application form in detail and write a letter to outline your experience and suitability.

Dear Parents

Thank you to all of you who came on Friday night. Despite the weather, it was a good evening. WISH worked so hard to get the evening ready and it was so rewarding to them that so many of you made the effort to attend.

School Trip
On Wednesday, please ensure your child wears trainers or similar. Please do not send in wellies as these can cause blisters when worn all day. Please make sure your child has:

• an anorak or waterproof
• a packed lunch & drink
• a school sweatshirt
• travel sickness pills (see class teacher for authorization)
• backpack for carrying lunchbox

The coaches will return at approximately 4.00pm. It is now too late to order FSM packed lunches, so if you have not booked already, you will need to provide your own. Children need to be ready to leave promptly at 9am.

Industrial Action
The school will be closed on Thursday 30th June owing to Industrial Action by the teachers. The Government are proposing to increase the retirement age to 66 and change other rules regarding teacher’s pensions. The teachers have never taken Industrial Action before and do so reluctantly. If the Government re open negotiations the teachers will be pleased to defer their action.

Sports Day
Weather permitting, Sports Day will be Wednesday 29th June @ 9.30am. We still have some children with no PE kit. Please do check your child has a PE kit that fits. Thank you.

Dear Parents

Thank you for the warm wishes I have received on my return. It is very much appreciated!

Sports Day
On Thursday your child will learn which team they are in for Sports Day. We hope that you will be able to provide the appropriate colour T-Shirt for sports day which is on Wednesday 29th June at 9.15am on the Junior School field.

School Trip to Moors Valley
On June 22nd, the whole school will visit Moors Valley Country Park. This is a really exciting day out with a woodland activity trail, adventure playground and the chance to explore a woodland environment in safety. It is a great day out for any child and so no child shall miss out, the school is to heavily subsidize the cost of the trip. If you are entitled to Free School Meals, please complete the slip to order a packed lunch. The cost of the trip will be £5 per child payable to the school office. The children will need to wear trainers or sensible shoes as there is lots of walking and climbing to do. I would like the children to wear school sweatshirts so that they are easily identified but would suggest they wear jeans or leggings so they can clamber in comfort! If your child suffers from travel sickness, please let your child’s teacher know. Thank you.

I am delighted to say that I am now allowed back to work, however, for another monthy it will be on reduced hours and duties and on crutches! I have had to learn a lot of patience during the last few months, old bones take a long time to heal, even when you want it to happen quickly.

I would like to thank publicly Mrs Mason and all of the staff who have worked very hard to keep everything as normal for the children.

YEAR TWO ‘Lets Get Cooking’Starting this Wednesday (sorry about the short notice), we would like to invite 4 parents and their year 2 children to come and develop their cooking skills with our school cook, Mrs Rush. The sessions will be held weekly, starting THIS WEDNESDAY at 2pm. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Please give your names in to Mrs Mesnard in the office. Thank you.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS
All clubs will continue until the end of June.

PHOTOS
If you wish to order your child’s class photo, please send in your order by Wednesday 8th June. Eagles class have had their photo retaken today and will receive their order forms shortly.

Newsletter No 19

This has been a very short term, nevertheless, the children will be ready for a rest after SATS and assessments! Mrs Ball is having her plaster removed tomorrow – we expect that she will be coming back to school in the near future. School finishes on Friday at 3.05pm and we hope you all have a good half term and we will see the children back in school on Monday 6th June.

Talent Show
The children put on a wonderful show on Friday evening – we had a variety of acts and the audience was kept entertained. Well done to all the children who took part and a big ‘thank you’ to WISH for organising the event.

Mathletics News
Westbury Infants children have currently answered 30491 questions on the curriculum parts of Mathletics and a whopping 145937 questions on live Mathletics.

Multiskills - Matravers
The Year 1 children will be at Matravers on Wednesday for a Multiskills session with Matravers staff and pupils.

Lackham College Trip

Dear Reception Parents

On Thursday 12th May, the Reception children will be visiting Lackham College. Children will need to wear trousers, school jumpers, trainers (wellies if wet) and bring a packed lunch in a backpack. The children will leave school at 9.30am and return at approximately 3pm.

If your child is entitled to Free School Meals and you wish the school to provide a packed lunch, please indicate on the slip below. The cost of the trip will be £8. Please return the reply slip to school by Monday 9th May at the latest. We would like all children to participate in the trip so if finances are a problem, please come and speak to the school office.

Well, we are nearly at the end of another term, we hope you all have a safe and happy holiday – the children come back to school on Wednesday 27th April.

Royal Wedding Celebrations
We are planning to do activities based on the Royal Wedding when the children come back to school.

Wednesday 27th April
The children are going to be split into 6 groups and will work on various activities during the day – dancing, singing, designing hats and more.

Thursday 28th April
We would like the children to wear red, white and blue if possible as we will be having a garden party during the day. Mrs Rush has planned a menu – mini hot dogs and burgers, crudités with tomato and cheese dips, jelly with meringue and ‘Bucks Fizz’ (orange juice and lemonade). It would be lovely to have all the children at this special meal which will cost £1.60 as usual. Please indicate below if you would like your child to attend ‘The Garden Party’.

School Comms
You should have already received a letter telling you about School Comms, a system of communicating with parents via email and text. We have found the system to be extremely useful in contacting parents in an emergency. If you haven’t already, please could you return the reply slip indicating that you are happy to receive information this way and providing up to date contact details. Thank you.

Parent’s Evenings

Visiting School

RED NOSE DAY
Wear something red for Red Nose Day. We will ask the children to pay 50p and wear something red. We are also trying to cover a red nose with copper coins so please send in any spare coins with your child or come and see the ‘nose’ at the end of the school day to see how we have done! Red Nose Day – Friday 18th March
Children can come to school wearing something red for a donation of 50p. We will also have a ‘big red nose’ that we hope we can cover in pennies – please check your pockets and drawers for any loose change you have hanging about and send it in with your child!! Check out the menu for Red Nose Day – Mrs Rush has come up with a colourful combination.

Book Fair
Starting on Wednesday 9th March until Tuesday 15th March. Come along and purchase a book with your child. The fair will be held in the hall except on Monday and Tuesday when it will be in the library. Children will receive a £1 book token to spend at the fair.

Dear Parents,

I hope you all have an enjoyable and restful half term. School reopens on Monday 28th February. I will be absent from school from March 1st as I am having an operation on my foot. Mrs Mason will take my place. I am sure you will all give her your support.

School Photos
On Tuesday 1st March, the school photographer will be visiting. All children will have individual photographs taken. If you wish your children to have their photo with a brother or sister either in school or from pre- school, please complete the attached slip and come to the hall at 8.40 am. Thank you.

E-Safety Workshop
On Wednesday March 2nd, Mrs Strout and Mrs Seager will be in school at 2.30 to talk to parents about E-Safety. The internet has grown rapidly in the last few years and they will be able to give you a few tips to keep your children and family safe. Please come along, everyone is welcome. I have ordered a CD for every family which also gives good advice. Please find time to watch it.

Family Learning Workshop
We have had a good response to our Family Learning Workshop. Don’t forget the taster session is on Friday 4th March at 1 o’clock.

Year 1/2 Clubs
Football and Cheerleading Club will continue after half term. All children who were on the waiting lists will be able to take part. Children who have taken part in both clubs, will be asked to attend just football on Tuesdays to allow the other children to participate.

Shed
We have a small shed for the Reception classes to store outdoor play equipment in. Would anyone be kind enough to erect it for us? The shed came from last year’s Morrison tokens.

Homework
This week the teachers have been busy assessing the children’s progress. The teachers and children have been working extremely hard and so there will be no formal homework set this week. Please do read with your child and if you have the internet, they can access Mathletics.

Today was a music day! All of the children have taken part in a drum workshop and Sign 2 Sing. Thank you to all of you who have sent in donations (if you have forgotten, tomorrow will be fine!).

E-Safety
Mrs Strout and Mrs Seager will be holding an E-Safety information session on Wednesday 2nd March at 2.30pm. Please come to the main entrance. Thank you.

Family Learning
I have arranged for a Family Learning Course for next term. The course will be run on Fridays and will give parents an opportunity to work with their child to develop a ‘Story Box’. If you would like to find out more, there will be a taster session on Friday March 4th from 1pm – 3pm. Come along and see if it’s for you. There will be a crèche provided. If you can’t make the 4th and want more information, I can send you a leaflet. The course will run every Friday from 1pm – 3pm until Easter.

The Drive and Smoking
I have received several complaints about parents continuing to use the drive and also about parents smoking at the school gates. Please, please be more considerate of our children. They are very young and surely everyone wants them to be safe and healthy.

WISH Disco

Half Term

E-Safety
Mrs Strout and Mrs Seager, two of our parent Governors, recently attended ‘E-Safety’ training. The course explored the dangers for children of using the Internet and raised some interesting points.

Mrs Strout and Mrs Seager are happy to meet with parents to talk about how to keep children safe when using the internet. If you would like to come to meet with them, I will arrange a meeting for 2.25pm one afternoon. Please complete the attached slip to indicate your interest.

Sign2Sing Record Breaking Attempt
We are taking part in a World Record Breaking attempt! On February 9th at 2.45pm the children will sign and sing ‘I Want to Teach the World to Sing’ while all over the country, other children will sign and sing too. The Record Breaking attempt is being organised by Sign Health, a national charity, dedicated to improve the health and well being of deaf people. It would be great if the children could bring a small donation, maybe 10p, to support the work of the charity.

Children in Need
Mrs Rush, the school cook, will be selling Pudsey Bear biscuits on Friday for Children in Need. The biscuits will cost 50p each. Children should bring in their money on Friday.

Cinderella
We have been invited to a dance performance of Cinderella at Matravers School on Friday November 26th. We will walk to Matravers School so please ensure that your child has a coat. The Reception children have been invited to take part in a Dance Workshop after the performance and will not return to school until approximately 12.15. Please could the ‘morning’ children’s parents arrange to collect their children later. Thank you.

Fleeces
Now that the weather has turned colder, you may wish to purchase a school fleece. We currently have most sizes in stock at a cost of £13.00. Please see Mrs Mesnard in the school office.

Last Week of Term
We would like to invite the ‘morning’ Reception children to stay all day for the last week of term (Monday 13th December – Friday 17th December). This will allow them to enjoy all the Christmas festivities. If you are entitled to Free School Meals, please see Mrs Mesnard as soon as possible to complete the necessary paperwork. If you are not entitled to Free School Meals but would like your child to have a school dinner, they must be ordered and paid for on Monday mornings. Currently, they cost £1.60 per day.

Freetime
Don’t forget to apply for Freetime activities for your child if you are entitled. If you are not sure if you qualify, please see Mrs Mesnard in the school office.

Automatic Door
We are still trying to solve the problem of the school entrance door not opening correctly. Please could you help us by not trying to open the door by pulling the handle. The door will open automatically if you press the buzzer and then stand well back away from the sensors. Thank you.

Absence Line
If your child will not be attending school, please could you ring the absence line on 01373 859795. This is an answer machine on which you may leave a message. This should be done on each day that your child will not be attending school. Thank you.

Birds of Prey

Open Day
On Friday November 12th, we are holding an Open Day with Westbury Juniors. If you wish to see the school in action you are welcome to come at 10am or 2pm. You are then welcome to tour the Junior School. Everyone is welcome to visit the school, so please tell your friends and family.

Zebras
Zebra class has been invited to take part in a Multi Skills session at Matravers on Wednesday 17th November. The children will walk to Matravers leaving school at 1.15pm and returning at the end of school. Please ensure your child has a coat and jogging bottoms or similar in school. Be Aware, Don’t Scare!
The staff has been alerted that a suspicious character, male approximately 50, has been seen videoing junior age children in Trowbridge. I have asked the staff to be extra vigilant. The police advice is to make staff and children aware but not to scare anyone. We will continue to be vigilant so that your children are safe at school. With the holidays coming up, please be extra cautious to ensure your child’s safety.

Thank you for supporting our harvest collection. We have raised £32.41 which will be sent to Kenya to support the children’s home Mrs Channon and I visited.

Holidays in Term Time
I thought it might be helpful to clarify the Local Authority position regarding holidays in term time. The guidance states:

Time off from school for family holidays is not a right. Schools may only agree ‘holiday leave’ in exceptional circumstances such as:

• When a family needs to spend time together to support each other during or after a time of crisis;
• For service personnel and other employees who are prevented from taking holidays outside term time.

The Local Authority would not however, expect schools to agree to holiday leave if;

• The student has poor attendance (less than 90% and/or more than 10 late arrivals at school)
• The student would miss examinations.

Holidays for the following reasons will not be authorised:

• Availability of cheap holidays;
• Availability of the desired accommodation;
• Poor weather experienced in school holiday periods;
• Overlap with the beginning or end of term.

In all circumstances of holiday leave, a Holiday Form should be completed, well in advance of the holiday, by the parent with whom the student normally resides. These are available from the school office. if a student accumulates 10 or more sessions (5 days) of unauthorised holiday absence within a 6 month period, the school must notify the Local Authority and a Penalty Notice will be issued to each parent for each child where that applies. A penalty of £50 will apply if paid within 28 days or £100 up to 42 days. If after 42 days the penalty has not been paid, legal proceedings will be taken by the Local Authority, through the magistrates court, for the unauthorised absence.

To help you avoid penalty fines, please find attached term dates for this academic year.

Morrisons ‘Let’s Grow’ Vouchers
Please collect the ‘Let’s Grow’ vouchers from Morrisons. We hope to get lots of pairs of wellies and some more tools for our gardens.

Terry Clements Memorial Concert
We will be inviting some children in Year2 to sing at a concert in memory of Terry Clements. The concert will be on Wednesday 13th October at 7pm in Matravers School Hall.

Dogs
May I remind all parents that NO DOGS are allowed on school premises. This includes dogs being carried in arms or on pushchairs. Thank you.

Family photos
Don’t forget that the photographer will be in school on Tuesday evening from 5.00 – 6.00pm to take family photos. These photos are always beautiful and make great Christmas presents.

Harvest
On Friday 1st October, we will be having our harvest assembly. Unfortunately, due to space restrictions, we are unable to invite parents; however, we would be very grateful for any donations of money which will go to charity. Also, the results of the cake competition will be announced at this assembly.

School Meals
If your child wishes to have school meals, these must be ordered and paid for on a Monday. Please send in to the class teacher, the correct money in an envelope with your child’s name, class and which days meals are required. If your child is entitled to Free School Meals, we would be grateful if you could let us know on a Monday morning which days your child requires dinners that week. Thank you.

WISH Uniform Sale
WISH will be holding a second hand uniform sale in the school hall between 8.30am and 9.30am on Thursday 30th September.

Security Cameras
We are constantly striving to ensure the safety of our children and therefore, we have just had security cameras installed in the school. The cameras mean we are better able to see who is on the school premises at all times.

Dear Parents,

Welcome back or welcome to Westbury Infants!

Over the summer we have had an enormous amount of work done, the whole school has been rewired and a new boiler installed. Unfortunately, whilst the contractors Wheelers were fantastic, there are one or two outstanding pieces of work to finish! We hope to have all our computers back on line today and the rest of the work will be completed at half term.

New reading colours/bands
Whilst the building works were underway, we have been busy rebanding all of the reading books! A mammoth task that Mr Mould has overseen. We have also bought £2000 of new books for guided reading. During the last year, Mr Mould has undertaken an extensive study of reading development and we are to implement changes arising from his research. Children will bring home books that they are secure with, being able to read 90% or more of the text. This will boost their confidence and aid their comprehension. In school the children will tackle books at a higher level with their teacher at least twice a week. They will also have opportunities to read with other adults. If you are confused, do please talk to myself or your child’s teacher.

Children in Year R will also bring home books to share with their parents. I will be holding a Reading Meeting for Year R parents in the hall on Wednesday 15th September. Hopefully this will help you understand how we teach reading and how you can help.

If parents of Year 1 and Year 2 children would like more detail about the new colours and strategy, I will be available in the hall Friday 10th September from 2.40pm to talk to. Please don’t panic if your child appears to have too easy a book, this could be because of the rebanding, they have regressed over the holidays, the teacher wants to boost their confidence or is still assessing their ability.

Book Bags
If you require a book bag, they are available from the school office at a cost of £3.50.

Apples
If you would like to collect apples from the orchard, please help yourself.

The Drive
Please help us to keep the children safe by not using the Drive. Children and cars just do not mix. Thank you.

School Meals
If your child is in Year R and their date of birth is between 01.09.05 – 31.03.06 and you think you maybe entitled to Free School Meals, please see Mrs Mesnard in the school office as soon as possible. Thank you.

If your child wishes to have school meals, these must be ordered and paid for on a Monday. Please send in to the class teacher, the correct money in an envelope with your child’s name, class and which days meals are required. Thank you.

This year the school has had to cut the number of classes and teachers. Unfortunately the school can no longer afford its current number of classes. From September there will be 6 classes:

The children in the mixed Yr 1 / Yr 2 class will have an age range spread of 6 months; this will be Yr 2s born between mid June and August and Yr 1s born between September and December.

Attached to this letter you will find your child’s class and teacher. The children will meet their new teacher on Monday afternoon. If you have any worries or concerns please come and speak to me.

Next Tuesday the teachers will be available to discuss your child’s report if you should wish to.

During the summer holiday the school is being completely rewired as this is a major piece of work we will be taking 3 TD days in September to ensure the school is prepared for the children, who will return on Monday 6th September.

Dear Parents,

Thank you for the fabulous support on Friday evening. Also, so many thanks to WISH whose hard work raised approximately £1,300!!

We have some Silent Auction lots awaiting collection and some raffle prizes with no names or telephone numbers. The numbers are 286 334 335 854 855 and 916. Please call into the office if you’ve kept your ticket.

Sports Day
Hopefully the weather will be kind and we will have Sports Day next Monday 5th July at 10am on the Junior School field. Please make sure your child has their kit, a drink, and sunhat and sun cream. Thank you.

Year Two Concert
The evening concert will be on Friday July 16th at 6pm. This is always very popular and we will need to restrict to 3 tickets per family. Other family members and siblings from the Junior School are welcome to come to a 10 o’clock performance on the 16th July.

Library Challenge
The library is again running its summer reading challenge. The librarian will be coming to tell the children about this on July 12th.

School Reports
Reports will be distributed on Monday July 12th. If you need a duplicate report, please let us know. The teachers may only hand the report to the child’s parent unless you give permission in writing for someone else to collect.

The children will learn of their new teacher and class on Wednesday 14th July and will spend some time with their new teacher on Monday 19th July.

Please note that this lunch is for the parents of Year 2 children only. The cost of the lunch is £2.50 for all adults and £1.60 per child (if not entitled to free school meals). Please bring a blanket to sit on and pray for continued good weather.

Dear Parents,

Thank you for the marvellous response to the Sponsored Football. We have raised over £1500 which is amazing. If you have not sent in your child’s sponsor money and form, please do so by Friday. Frustratingly, Speedmark want to receive all the forms and money before sending out the children’s incentive! I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

School Dinner Money
Our new system is working well, with only a few hiccups. Please remember all lunches are to be booked and paid for on a Monday. if your child is entitled to Free School Meals, we will assume that they will be eating a school dinner everyday unless you tell us otherwise.

Non-Uniform day
This Friday, we will be holding a Non-Uniform Day to support WISH in their preparations for the Barbeque on the following Friday. Children are welcome to come in Non School Uniform for a donation of £1 or a raffle prize, tombola prize or a surprise! Please help WISH, they work so hard and all of the money raised is used for the benefit of all the children.

Ice-Cream Sales
If you haven’t the time to be a full time member of WISH, but could spare 20 minutes on a Friday to help with the ice-cream sales, we would be delighted! We were overwhelmed by the response on Friday. A couple of extra hands would shorten the queues. If you can help, please see me or Bev Joyce. Many thanks.

Year R Trip to Longleat

The Reception classes will be visiting Longleat on July 13th. The children will leave school at approximately 9.30am and return in time for the end of the school day.

The children will need a packed lunch and a bag to carry it in. If you are entitled to Free School Meals and wish to order a packed lunch, please indicate on the attached slip.

They will need to wear trousers & trainers (or equivalent) and school sweatshirts. The cost of the trip is £8.50. Please return all slips and payments by 5th July.

Welcome back from a lovely sunny holiday!

Unfortunately, the Children’s Centre suffered severe water damage from a leaking pipe during the holiday and thus will be offering curtailed services for some time.

After School Clubs
There was some confusion last night regarding After School Clubs for which I apologize. The following clubs will be operating this term:

Geography Week – Beginning 14th June
On Monday 14th June, all Yr1 and Yr2 children will be travelling by coach to Westbury White Horse. The children will be spending approximately 45 minutes looking at the physical features of the area and the reasons for the settlement of Westbury. There will be no charge for the coach. YrR children will be visiting the town centre and park during the week, weather permitting.

WISH Garden Party
Please put the evening of Friday 25th June in your diaries. WISH will be holding their annual garden /orchard party. Please feel free to bring a blanket and a bottle of wine and enjoy a summer’s evening (fingers crossed the sun will shine). The Yr2 children will be performing some Country Dancing; there will be a Silent Auction and lots of stalls!

School Dinners
Please remember that as from yesterday, school dinners must be ordered and paid for on a Monday. The only exceptions will be children absent on a Monday. Everyone’s budgets are tightening and school is no exception, this new procedure will help us have less wastage.

School Uniform
If you require new uniform for September, please see Mrs Mesnard for an order form.

If you would like a class photo, please get your order in to the school office by tomorrow morning.

I am delighted to inform you that our website has been updated! As it is very new, there may still be one or two errors – please let us know if you find any. You will now be able to read the dinner menu, the latest newsletter and check term dates if you log on to

School Dinner Money
Starting after half-term, all school dinners will have to be ordered and paid for on Mondays. Owing to increased overheads, we can no longer cater for daily choice. Please send dinner money in a sealed envelope with the days of the week your child wishes to order a meal, e.g. all week or Mon, Wed, Fri etc.

Football Sponsorship
Children are welcome to wear their football kit to school on Friday. During the day, they will not only be taking part in the sponsored goal shoot, but also in 5 other activities. It should be a fun day. We have talked to the children about how to get sponsors safely and have stressed that you do not have to get sponsors to take part.

Reception Trip
Some parents are worried that they have missed the letter for the Year R trip to Longleat. They haven’t, I haven’t written it yet. I have only given advance warning of the trip on 13th July at a cost of £8.50. I will write formally after half term.

E Safety
The Governors constantly monitor the safety of the children. At last weeks meeting, a new E Safety policy was agreed. Part of the requirement of the policy is parental consent for internet access. Could all parents of Yr 1 and Yr R children please sign and return the attached slip.

Sadly, the Drive is again causing problems! The Children’s Centre, the Nursery and the School have all asked the police to take action. All cars that park in front of the gates will run the risk of having their registration number reported to the police. The safety of the children is my concern; please do not endanger the children by thoughtless behaviour.

Year One Parents
We would like to invite parents of year one children to lunch on Thursday 27th May. The cost will be £2.50 per adult and £1.60 per child. (FSM children will not need to pay). The menu is:

Apple Sponge & Custard

Please book your lunch (with payment) by Friday 21st May.

Sponsored Speed Mark Event
Your child will be bringing home a sponsorship form. On May 28th the children will be given the opportunity to shoot at a goal and have the speed of their kick registered. All children will receive a certificate and the fastest (boy & girl) in each class will receive a medal. Please make sure the children have PE kit in school. If you wish to see if you can kick it faster than your child, you are welcome to come to school at 2.30pm and for 50p have 3 kicks at goal!

Mobile Phones
Please let us know when you change your mobile phone number. When a child is ill or hurt, they need you not us. Unfortunately, we have been finding too many numbers out of date. Please help us!

WISH Bingo
Friday 21st May is Bingo Night. Doors open @ 6pm – Eyes Down @ 6.30pm.

WISH Working Party
Next Saturday 22nd May, WISH have agreed to come and work on the school grounds and the
wild area. Please come and help if you can! Children welcome.

Class Photos
The photographer will be in school on Wednesday 19th May to take the class photos. Please make sure your child is wearing school uniform.
